Mathematics

Mathematics is diverse, engaging and essential for everyday life, equipping students with the right skills to move on to the next stage of their education and preparing them for the workplace. The Mathematics Department at Pershore High places students at the heart of everything we do.

We are a strong and dedicated team of 8 specialist teachers and a specialist Learning Support Practitioner, working closely together with the same common aims. We are all passionate in our desire to support our students in growing more confident in their mathematics skills, enjoy their lessons, and achieve success in the subject. Every one of our students deserves to achieve success in Mathematics , regardless of their starting point and no matter how challenging, or easy, they find it.

Our Mathematics curriculum is designed to lead students on a journey towards GCSE, with the flexibility to help them move at a pace that is suited to their ability. Students are organised into sets, and whilst all classes in a particular cohort follow the same units during the year, the content of those units and the amount of time spent on some concepts may differ slightly across groups. We entrust teachers with planning lessons to suit their students, and making appropriate adaptations when required. We know how important it is that students have time to reinforce previous learning, and our curriculum is designed so that each year, key concepts are re-visited in some form and then built upon.

We use regular assessments across all year groups to help us monitor how well students are performing, as well as helping students identify their gaps in understanding and prepare for formal, external examinations. Students also receive regular homework tasks, which may take the form of a written task, learning task, or an online assignment. Our students have access to a variety of brilliant online resources, including GCSEPod (Year 7-11), MathsWatch (Year 7-12) and Integral (Year 12-13).

We enjoy a great deal of success at GCSE, where we follow the AQA GCSE specification, and many of our students choose to continue their keen interest in mathematics by taking the subject at A Level. We follow the OCR (MEI) A Level specification and offer both Mathematics and Further Mathematics , where we consistently achieve excellent outcomes.
