High School

Part of the Avonreach Academy Trust

English

The overarching aim for English at Pershore High School is to equip all students with the reading, writing, speaking and listening skills that will enable them to achieve their potential both academically and as members of society. Through inclusive practice and challenge for all, we strive to ensure that each of our students end their learning journeys with success.

We recognise that reading and enjoying a wide range of stimulating texts empowers students to mature culturally, socially and emotionally. Therefore, our curriculum is designed to ensure that every year, all students receive a rich and varied diet of novels, plays, poetry and non-fiction. We aim to foster a love of reading, develop critical thinking skills and create opportunities for students to explore and understand the wider world.

Being able to write with clarity, accuracy and coherence underpins academic success across the curriculum. It also facilitates the lifelong capacity to express ideas and emotions. For this reason, our students have frequent opportunities to write in a range of styles and for different purposes and audiences. Across each Key Stage, students consolidate and build on their prior learning to create texts with increasing breadth and depth.

Furthermore, we understand that speaking and listening skills are developed through practice. In lessons, students are encouraged to take an active role in collaborative work including discussions, debates and presentations.
