Part of the Avonreach Academy Trust

Duke of Edinburgh

Take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme at Pershore High School. For the past seven decades, the Duke of Edinburgh Award Charity has inspired and transformed the lives of millions of young people from all walks of life. From volunteering to physical activities, life skills to expeditions, achieving a DofE Award is a passport to a brighter future, valued by employers and universities. The Award has three levels. At Pershore High we offer two levels of the course:

  • Bronze - Minimum age to participate is 14 years old.  Pupils may register for the Award in the autumn term of Year 10.

  • Gold - Minimum to participate is 16 years old. Pupils may register for the Award on completion of the Silver Award or at the start of the autumn term in Year 12 (Lower Sixth). You will be given the opportunity to enrol for this in June of year 11 during Sixth Form Induction. There are only 14 places available and you will work towards your award throughout your time in the sixth form. If you have started Bronze or Silver you must have completed them before starting Gold, although it is not compulsory to have done any level of D of E before. Instead you can be a direct Gold entrant.

Each of the levels has four parts:

  • Volunteering - is all about making a difference to other people's lives. Getting off your sofa and taking time out to change things for the better can be great fun. From conservation to fundraising, there is an endless list of things you can get involved in.

  • Skills – this section is all about developing practical and social skills and personal interests. By choosing to develop a particular skill you are not only developing a new talent but you will also boost your self-esteem, develop practical and social skills and learn how to set and rise to a challenge.  If this isn't enough, it should also be good fun too!

  • Physical – in the Physical section you should achieve a greater physical fitness through participation and improvement in physical activity.  It's sure to make you feel healthier and you'll have fun along the way! You don't need to be super fit or Olympic standard to achieve this section - giving it a go and getting better is enough.

  • Expedition – for most this is the most exciting section of the award. Achieving your Award is an adventure from beginning to end and this section can give you some of your most memorable experiences! Our expeditions are completed on foot and in recent years we have visited the Cotswolds at Bronze level, and the Elan Valley in Wales for the Gold Award.

There is an additional requirement at Gold level:

  • Residential Project - to achieve your Gold Award, you need to complete an extra section – the Residential.  This involves spending 5 days and 4 nights away from home on a shared activity with people you’ve never met before.
