Business and Economics

The successful Business and economics department at PHS aims to provide students with the tools ready to assess the wider world of Business. We aim to develop literacy, oral literacy and numeracy to aid decision-making. We offer two pathways, an academic exam based approach and an alternative vocational approach at both KS4 and KS5.

Key Stage 4 – GCSE Business and OCR Cambridge National Enterprise and Marketing.

At KS4, we successfully offer two courses, the GCSE (Edexcel) Business course and the OCR Cambridge National Enterprise and Marketing. The aim of both courses is to develop students' understanding of Entrepreneurship, Finance, Marketing and the wider world; the only difference is in their assessment model. The GCSE is an exam only based course whilst the Cambridge National Enterprise and Marketing course is 50% examination and 50% coursework. This course will benefit those who enjoy the varied assessment it offers. We currently offer three groups of GCSE and one group of Enterprise and Marketing.

Key Stage 5 – Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate in Business

Our progression to a KS5 course is the very high performing Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate in Business course. This follows the vocational approach with a 50% examination and 50% coursework model. We aim to create confident, well-rounded young people through examinations, presentations, role-plays and assignments, and to support them to become adults with high self-esteem and a strong self-belief to take into the world of work or further study.

Key Stage 5 – A level (Edexcel) Economics B

This is the department’s very successful A Level course. The advantages of this course is that it allows students to develop their economic knowledge using real world business contexts. Our aim is to produce well-rounded students; who are comfortable to critically analyse and evaluate economic concepts that occur in the real world. Debate and discussions are generated that teach the value of balanced views. Lessons reference micro as well as macroeconomic concepts; students understand the balanced role the Chancellor of the Exchequer has in the successful running of the economy.
