Sports and Exercise Science
“There are 3 keys to success: First, work out what you want to achieve; second, work out the price associated with that achievement; third, pay the price. Most people only get 2 out of 3.”
Carl Lewis - 9 times Olympic gold medalist
You will develop your knowledge and understanding of the physiological, psychological, socio-cultural and historical factors which influence participation and quality of performance. Sport and Physical Activity is an interesting, academic and multidimensional course which crosses the art/science divide.
Throughout the course, you must relate to your own sporting experiences as well as those of the elite performer. Assessment comes in three forms: written examination papers (40%), written assignments and dvd evidence of practical coaching sessions (60%).
During Year 12, you will be required to study three units. Unit 1 – Body systems and the effects of physical activity, Unit 2 – Sports coaching and activity leadership and Unit 3 – Sports organization and development. The focus in Year 13 builds on the previous year’s content whilst also looking at sport and exercise psychology and biomechanics.
Many students go on to study Sports Science, Coaching and Development and Physiotherapy at leading universities, including Loughborough and Bath. Sports Studies can lead to a diverse range of careers, especially in the sport and leisure industries, teaching and the Health Service.
"Whether you are an avid sportsman or just have a passion for the subject, studying Sport and Physical Activity is great. The topics studied over the course builds a well-rounded knowledge of sport, health and performance, and I would highly recommend to anyone with an interest in the subject."
