Psychology

“People often say that this or that person has not yet found himself. But the self is not something one finds, it is something one creates.”
– Thomas Szasz
Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and behaviour. It helps us to understand, predict and in some cases change unhealthy behaviour.
At Pershore Sixth Form our students study a range of contemporary subjects and topics that prepare them for undergraduate study and beyond. For example, they will learn about the origins of criminal behaviour and will be involved investigating the usefulness of offender profiling and the treatment of offenders in the UK. They will also investigate explanations and treatments for a range of mental health disorders, as well as discuss the controversy of receiving a mental health diagnosis. Through a range of experiential experiences all students will gain a deeper insight into their own and the behaviour of those around them.
Psychology lessons are designed to engage students through a range of activities, involving group discussions, practical research tasks, and the application of learning beyond the classroom. Our students develop many valuable transferable skills, which include the ability to manipulate and understand data, to think analytically, respond to arguments and counte
r arguments, write cogently, and conduct effective independent research.
Our students will have the opportunity to interview real life offenders, including a murderer to gain insight into the British judicial system as well as the factors contributing to crime. They will also attend a Phobia clinic to understand better how phobias form and are treated, and they can also address some of their own fears by handling animals and insects.
Psychology remains one the most popular A Level choices at Pershore. A level results are consistently very good, and many our students go on to study Psychology at University.
